What Are Considered Healing Arts?

More and more people are turning to the healing arts, which encompasses various practices like art and music therapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, aromatherapy, naturopathy, and tai chi. A 2015 study conducted by Gallup found that around two-thirds of Americans reported that chiropractic could treat some types of pain.

Those who decide to use the healing arts need to consider how they will work these practices into their care. This article will explore the healing arts, including the different types.

What are healing arts?

The healing arts encompass several practices — some of which are mainstream (acupuncture and chiropractic), while others are not (energy healing). These practices are considered art because they do not follow traditional medical protocols. But that does not mean that they are not effective.

For example, studies have shown that acupuncture can help those with chronic pain from migraines and osteoarthritis. But the studies do not use well-controlled methods and do not compare acupuncture to a placebo.

Types of healing arts

There are several different types of healing arts. These include:

Chiropractic

Chiropractors use manipulation techniques to move portions of the body back into alignment. To practice, chiropractors need a license in the state where they live and operate their business. They may also study at a chiropractic school, which takes three to four years.

Massage therapy

Massage therapy incorporates massage and pressure to relieve pain. Each state is responsible for establishing its own licensing requirements. Massage therapists undergo training to familiarize themselves with massage techniques to avoid hurting clients. They can also pursue a National Board Certification, requiring massage therapists to take classes at an accredited school and gain 500 hours of massage practice experience.

Traditional Chinese medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine incorporates various methods, including herbal medicine, acupuncture, acupressure, and tai chi. With acupuncture, needles are used to redirect energy in the body, while acupressure involves placing needles on specific pressure points. Acupuncture has been known to help with some chronic pain conditions. Acupuncturists must undergo education and training and typically apply for a state license to practice.

Mind-body therapy

Various mind-body therapies work to promote relaxation. Some aim to heal the body by healing the mind, while others work to increase mindfulness. Meditation, hypnosis, progressive muscle relaxation, breath work, and guided meditation are types of mind-body therapies.

People who practice mind-body therapy do not typically need a license as they are not considered medical providers. However, there are a range of certifications and training programs that people can participate in to learn specific techniques for mind-body therapies.

Energy therapy

Energy therapies work to redirect energy inside or outside of the body to promote healing or well-being. These therapies draw upon notions about energy within the universe or spiritual practices. With Reiki, a popular energy therapy, practitioners move their hands lightly above a person to redirect energy and promote healing. Practitioners do not typically need a license or special training as it does not involve changing anything about the body.
